Thought Bite: Living in the Present

For as long as I can remember, I have lived life looking forward to various events: travel, meeting friends, entertainment, and so many other things. But, increasingly, over the years, thanks to the witnessing that happens in meditation, I’ve come to see that whatever I look forward to comes and goes and leaves me empty once again.

As a result of observing this, I’ve come to the conclusion that this isn’t a good way to spend the precious moments of my life. So much time and energy go into anticipation, and so much time is not lived as a result.

When I’m forward looking, I’m not living the present moment, and in this way most of my life is passing unnoticed.

So, I’m beginning to change this habit. It’s not easy because the habit of anticipation is so strong.

My first step is to be present as much as possible each moment. I will still plan future events, but my intention is to be with each moment rather than with an anticipated future.

I’m learning to be present and you may hear more on this down the road. In the meantime, if you have an anticipation habit, you’re invited to join me in learning to be present.

Whether living in the moment, or from anticipation to anticipation, there is much to learn that can help us on our journey through life. Here is a video of a song by Bob Atchley on learning from life:
