Humans have a superpower. It's called choice.
We have the ability to choose between options, and to choose to stick with our choice or abandon it. All humans exercise their ability to choose, but very often their choices are made automatically, based on habits of thought and emotional reactions rather than on wisdom.
One of the benefits of meditating is that a meditation practitioner comes to know his or her habit and emotional patterns, and so can develop the ability to set them aside to some extent when making choices. In this way, one who meditates can slowly transform the way s/he responds to the world and change his or her whole life.
