One of the most basic practices in the Himalayan Yoga Meditation Tradition is breathing diaphragmatically with awareness, and there are many good reasons for this. Here are a few of them:
1) Breathing diaphragmatically is calming. Even ten minutes of deep diaphragmatic breathing tends to result in calmer mind, emotions and body.
2) When the breath is diaphragmatic, air is pulled into the base of the lungs where oxygen absorption is increased.
3) Breathing diaphragmatically stimulates the Vagus nerve, Vagus nerve stimulation has been found to reduce inflammation.
So check your breathing. Are you breathing diaphragmatically?
