Determination is a powerful force. Without it, reaching our goals is difficult if not impossible. If I want to begin in Paris and end up in Berlin, I need to take an appropriate transport along the appropriate route and stay the course. If, after starting the journey, I see a road going in a different direction and on a whim turn onto it, then I end up somewhere else.
From there, I might find a different diversion. In this way, I can follow whim after whim and never end up in Berlin. If, however, at some point I remember my goal and re-commit to it, then I can still complete my planned journey. Determination is the inner force that enables us to reach our goals.
Here is what Swami Rama said about determination:
“Decide that no matter what happens, you will do what you set out to do. If you are determined, possible distractions will still be there—but you will continue on your path and remain undisturbed. Sankalpa (determination) is very important. You cannot change your circumstances, the world, or your society to suit you. But if you have strength and determination you can go through this procession of life very successfully.”
